Hello friends!
I’m pretty excited about the thrift score I have to share with you guys today! There are times where I spot something at the thrift store and it just calls out to me, so I have to stop and examine it and, many times, make a snap judgment to take it home without exactly knowing why. Call it a sixth sense.
When I noticed this elephant planter at the thrift store, I originally thought it was a cookie jar that was missing a lid. As I picked it up to investigate, I was struck by its colors, details, and price tag of $3.98. I figured that I could always use it as a planter – if #thriftscorethursday has taught me one thing, it’s that anything can be a planter.
For less than the price of a Starbucks latte, what did I have to lose?
Turns out, this little guy is a planter, from the hand-painted ceramics manufacturer Fitz and Floyd. You can find your own online for between $30 and $300 – so between roughly 7x and 75x what I paid for my little thrift score.
Do you see those colors? Yellow + green = my jam! I could have plopped this guy almost anywhere in my home, but I decided that at the moment, he should live on the hearth in the dining room.
And that fern? Totally fake.
I spent 45 minutes at the nursery trying to find a houseplant that was a) hardy and hard to kill and b) not toxic to cats. I don’t know if that exists in nature, but it certainly wasn’t easy to locate locally!
I finally threw in the towel and went the faux route. I think this fern I found at Hobby Lobby is pretty darn convincing for $6 (half off sale for the win!)
I’d read online to spray the plastic leaves with hairspray to help dull the shine and make it appear more life-like.
Did it work? I don’t know – you tell me. But my new fern certainly smells good!
The dining room is actually sporting several thrifted finds at the moment. I shared this original oil painting thrift find on Instagram recently, and the burl clock and brass candle holders were shared on previous Thrift Score Thursdays.
And there’s Mr. Elephant, hanging around in the mix. I love this room!
The Features:
Are you ready for this week’s fantastic #thriftscorethursday features?
Katie from Red House West (Instagram: redhousewest) originally shared this thrifted lucite table a few weeks ago, and I was able to chime in with my new-found lucite cleaning tips. Look how fantastic it looks now! That mushroom lamp in the photo has totally stolen my heart as well – a perfect pairing!
This fiddle leaf fig Craigslist score Anna from Annabode (Instagram: annabode) shared has me drooling with envy, although if I had actually spotted the Craigslist posting I think I would have also been paralyzed with fear from my black thumb (see above where I discuss house plants).
But I just cannot resist a good fiddle leaf fig! Even if I do have difficulties keeping them alive.
Major plant envy over here, Anna!
I just love these submissions from nanp1960. First, she shared the total thrift haul – a few random objects on a tray. Then, she showed how she incorporated each item into her home, and they became truly fabulous! Impeccable styling, girl!
Finally, this is why I love #thriftscorethursday so much. Before last week, I didn’t know that I absolutely needed a giant wicker kangaroo basket in my life, but hearsayandhappiness set the record straight for me. Yes, yes I do need one! With googly eyes.
What an awesome find!

Ahhh – I’m too jealous! Because two are obviously better than one and now I need to pray that the thrifting gods grant me a matching planter one day!
oh how i love your elephant! it’s awesome!
Thanks Cassie!
Love your planter! That kangaroo basket is hilarious!
Thank you Paula! And yes – that kangaroo basket! How would we know that crazy and fun things like that exist if not for #thriftscorethursday? I get such a kick out of it! 🙂
Thanks for including me. I’m a stay at home “Mimi” four days a week, so on my off day I am usually out thrifting. I may be on the hunt for a kangaroo basket now!
Totally agree with Corinna that the elephant was totally made for your home!
I love your new planter! Thanks for the hairspray tip. I have a few fake plants that could use some de-shining 🙂
Thanks Caitlin! Hope the hairspray trick works for you!
Absolutely love that elephant–green and yellow are totally my jam, too! I have to say, the fern looks pretty real to me–definitely would never have known it was pretending. I’m trying to scout some realistic fake succulents at the moment, as the number I’ve killed has risen dangerously in the last few months…
The kangaroo basket is simply beyond! My day is enriched just from knowing it exists.
Thanks Brittany! I lingered over some very convincing succulents at Hobby Lobby before deciding on the fern – crazy realistic! And yes, I feel the same way about that kangaroo basket!
ooh, your elephant is amazing! I love him so much! He would like to come live in my bathroom with my planter collection, I think. I know he probably tells you he wants to stay at your house, but he’s just trying not to hurt your feelings ;).
Haha, I think you might be right 😉
Oh I love your planter! So cute!! xxx
That elephant is adorable!! I cannot believe the fiddle fig luck! Incredible! I would have to pass though so it could live!
I know! That fiddle leaf fig is so fabulous that little-black-thumb-old-me couldn’t be trusted with its care! 🙂
