Hey friends! Happy Thrift Score Thursday to you!
What’s been keeping you busy lately?
This week, I didn’t have much of a chance to do anything thrifting related, but I did get a chance to put two previous thrift scores to use in our living room…
My Find:
Do you remember these enormous pieces of art by artist Forrest Moses that I found at Goodwill a few months ago? They were – wait for it – $9 each, and turned out to be signed originals! In our old house, they hung in the living room and dining room.
I’ve been wanting to hang them both over the sofa here, but I’ve been a little bit chicken about putting holes into the walls for some reason and let it paralyze me for far too long. This past weekend, I finally decided to grab my hammer and my 50 lb. hooks and get these babies on the wall…
And yes, this is where I admit that I hung them just a little too low.
Decorators advise that art be hung at eye level, but I didn’t really account for a proper amount of breathing room between the bottom of the art and the top of the sofa. Really, it wasn’t totally apparent until I was editing these photos, but I’ll probably be moving them up a few inches… What do you think?
Questions of height aside, I’m absolutely loving them together in our living room! They bring in more of the rusty neutrals I’m loving so much lately!
Thrift Score Thursday Features:

And check out this ingenious idea from Kiova (@golddustgoods), who paired these antler plaques with a special vintage frame to create this striking wall art display!

I love love LOVE Thrift Score Thursday followups! I shared these Norman Cherner style side chairs from Sarah (@sawissinger) almost 100 weeks of Thrift Score Thursday ago – week 35, to be exact – in an as-found state. I’m so glad she tagged me when they made their glorious reappearance – the new upholstery job and refinishing are incredible! Read more here on her blog.

Do you know what else I love? When a #thriftscorethursday post makes me radically rethink my thrifting blinders. You know that deepset value system of what is and isn’t worth inspecting?
I have to tell you, I would totally have walked by this wooden bird candle holder that Oscar (@oscarbravohome) showcased so perfectly here. My eyes probably would have read the simple wooden shape as “primitive” or “country”, not “modern” – thankfully, Oscar saw its potential! I’ll definitely be re-calibrating my thrifting radar after this!

I feel so honored that my post on How to Shop Craigslist could have encouraged Melissa (@melissabrandman) to score such fabulous vintage spun fiberglass chairs! And I’m so envious of this beautiful outdoor space – I feel like an Alice in Wonderland-esque tea party is required!

Finally, I’m crazy about this dining room shot from Melissa (@megillicutti), featuring a $10 marble table that was meant to be sold, but couldn’t be parted with… A saga I trust many fellow gatherers will know well! All I can say is, you made the right call, Melissa!

how did i miss meg’s marble table?!?!? OMG!!!! i love her feed so much!
awesome features today! and i love your art above the sofa! i agree it needs to scoot up a bit, but the size, scale, color, style, everything is perfect!
Thank you Cassie! I’ll have to re-share pics once I get them inched up a teeny bit!
I missed that table too Cassie! Brynne your prints look amazing in this space and go perfectly with last weeks pillow. Looking good in here!
Thank you so much, Maggie! I have lots more plans for this space, but it’s fun to have it evolve with each new find!
yay elephants! I’ve been off my game a bit this summer because things have been so busy, but I’m diving back in today. Older kids have their first piano lesson of the fall, which is the perfect time for Abe and I to hit a thrift store or two.
Woohoo! Fingers crossed you find some great things, Gretchen!
Brynne, I love your art and I would not move them higher. I have struggled with this same issue every time I hang art and finally asked a friend at an art gallery; his response? Hang them for the way they will be viewed MOST. If people are standing, eye level; if people are sitting lower the art to create a better experience. Just a thought . . . . I would love to sit and stare at them for hours!!
That is some wonderful feedback, Robbyn – thank you! I definitely think they are best appreciated about where they are currently, but I might move them up maybe two-three inches just to gain some visual space between the bottom of the frame and the back of the sofa.
I know that it’s easy to hang art too high, so I was fighting against that impulse when I first hung these up. It’s a real science to get it right, I’m sure! 🙂
