Last week on The Gathered Home Facebook page I posted about an ugly piece of 1970’s office furniture that I had just purchased.
Would you like to see what it is?
One heavy-as-all-get-out, built like a tank, forty-year-old laminate credenza coming right up!
It’s just so underwhelming, I keep second guessing myself.
But it fit all my criteria – it was under $100 ($60 under, to be exact), the correct height and length, and it had doors rather than drawers. Most importantly it’s completely boxy. A modern shape was pretty high on my list of requirements.
I’m sure when I posted about my great credenza search of 2013 (yep, it’s totally a thing now) you may have envisioned something awesome and midcentury-fabulous. And this piece is definitely not that. But I envisioned something cheap and simple that I could customize and paint, and this piece fit the ticket.
I’ve been pinning some KILLER credenzas to my Credenza Love Pinterest board for inspiration. Seriously, go check them out. They are FABULOUS.

So far, here are the ideas I’m tossing around:
– All white
– All black
– Black frame with white doors
– Matte Charcoal Grey
– Green (darker than emerald), possibly with a faux-painted marble top
– White frame with gold leaf doors
– Black frame with gold leaf doors
– Black with white design on the doors (Greek key?)
– Grey frame with white doors
– Black, gold, and white crazy awesome art deco design like this
Etc., etc., etc. So many ideas!!! I feel so indecisive!
So I thought I would be fun to see what you would do! Which is your favorite idea? Or do you have a suggestion I haven’t even considered yet? Inspire me!
I’ll be painting the credenza over the weekend, so tune in next time to see what happens to That 70’s Credenza!
Hello Wisconsin!
Loved that 70s Show! LOOOOOOVED it and freaks and geeks.
Can't wait to see the painted result. I love the black and gold combo and I always drool when I see your leopard floor 😉
I love the black and gold as well!!!
Gotta be honest, when I first saw the pic my immediate thought was "I hope she paints it" haha. Which brings me to, the many reasons why this post is awesome.
1. Panted Furniture
2. You're considering Black and White
3. You mention one of the best shows AND use the slogan with WI- my home state!! hehe
Anywho I'm totally indecisive too. Not to add another idea into the mix but what about mostly white with a little black border with the Aztec look maybe on the doors? Can you tell I'm totally on-board with that style yet? haha
Ah – I love that Aztec design you're talking about! But just think of all the taping required… I'm also SERIOUSLY seriously obsessed with this art deco credenza from Pinterest. So a graphic design is not totally out of the realm of possibility…
Wow dresser would be overachiever status. Have you ever tried making your own stencil? Most craft stores sell stencil 'blanks,' transfer your design, then you just go to town with an exacto knife. It cuts down on on the taping…
I'm listening… 😉 Planning a trip to Hobby Lobby today, so we'll see what speaks to me! (Nope, I've never made my own stencil, let alone stenciled before, lol!)
That art deco credenza is HEAVENLY. I vote you replicate that one.
I know, right??????
Forgot to mention, if you are making a stencil– design it on the computer, print it out then trace (since the stencil blanks are semi-transparent) and trace with a sharpie– THEN go to town with the exacto knife.
Smart smart smart 🙂
I would love to see large-scale artwork decoupaged onto the panels that forms a larger image when the doors are all shut (think Japanese screen motif). I wonder if there is space for a layer like that–that wouldn't get messed up when opening and closing the doors. Then paint the border black and toe kick gold!
That's an awesome idea! Love it!
I really like the one you have in your Pinterest board- the wood doors with the kelly green top/sides. That could be fun. If not that, then something more classic- I like the grey frame/white door option. Or keep the doors wood and paint the frame something classic like white or grey 🙂

Thanks for the feedback Emily! There has been some progress in the painting department, but I don't want to spill the beans just yet 🙂 Suffice it to say, every part of it is covered in a certain unnamed color of paint and I'm plotting out a different colored design to apply on top of that…
