After adding some black details to my front door, I decided I just needed more black in my home! I’ve heard it said that every room needs a little black in it, and I agree. I used to get itchy mixing blacks and browns, but it doesn’t give me hives any more 🙂
I grabbed a little pot of black paint (Rustoleum Ultracover off-the-shelf flat black paint) and decided that the boring and unadorned doorway between the living room and dining room needed some eyeliner…
(Don’t look too closely at my edges – the textured walls make it a little difficult to keep perfectly straight lines! I’m thinking of adding some white molding around the edges next…)
The dining room obviously has quite a ways to go, but that’s another post for another time! (Read more about the china cabinet and the vintage faux bamboo metal dining table.)
This DIY update couldn’t have been easier – I used a smooth foam roller to apply two coats of the black paint, and an angled paint brush to reach the corners and do touchups at the end. The cost was around $3.50 for the little can of paint, and each coat took approximately 4.3 minutes. Quick, easy, cheap and dramatic! That’s a total win in my book!
What do you think? Do you have any boring doorways that could use a little flair? If you are bold enough, how fun would it be to use a neon color?? (So fun!)
Love this! I'm always wondering how that should be painted. Should it be the wall color inside the room or the outside wall color? This is great!
I hadn't even though of that, since the walls on either side are the same color… But yeah – going for something bold and unexpected takes care of the problem! 🙂
Such a great idea! I have several of these little archway's in our home and they all look like they need a little paint love 🙂
Thank you Caitlin 🙂 I'm always so inspired by your home and blog!
Yay for eyeliner in archways 😉 I like it!
Love it. A great way to add color and drama without a lot of time/money/wall space committed. My house is SO bold ('oak cask' aka not-daffodil-yellow on a kitchen wall; plum on a living room wall; pink/coral(?) in my claundry room, raspberry in my office, dark teal in my bedroom, light teal in the master bath)…that at some point I start to kick myself and think I should just paint it all the calm blue/grey of the livingroom/entry/hall…sigh. Resale is not gonna be fun.
All those colors sound lovely though! I am a huge color lover myself, but I'm restricting it to furnishings and accessories in our house to try to reign in my more-is-more sensibilities! 🙂
Love it, such a small thing to paint makes such a huge difference.
Thank you Eve 🙂
Oh my gosh, I have been trying to figure out what to do with my doorways since we moved in (almost 5 years ago, eep!). I have rounded archways and a matching arched built-in bookshelf which would all be awesome in coordinating colors. Thank you for this idea!
Thank you Amy! I'm so glad you found inspiration from my post – I think arches would look AMAZING painted this way! I'd absolutely love to see pictures when you're done 🙂
That is gorgeous I LOVE it!!!
Yay! I'm so glad you like it!
