I found these chairs in a group of 15 and quickly recognized the chair in the picture as Chair 66 by Alvar Aalto. This chair was originally designed in the 1930’s, but these were sold by ICF from 1962 onward. I’m not exactly sure how old the ones I have are.
It was quite the drive out to pick them up, and when I got there I found them stored in an old barn and in extremely terrible condition. I was pretty disappointed at first, but was able to get the whole lot extremely cheaply. Two of the chairs are completely trashed, seven are in very rough condition and I am considering patching and painting them, and six were sound enough for me to use a little sandpaper and Feed-N-Wax and elbow grease to get them in the following condition. They didn’t turn out at all as I anticipated, but I actually like the weathered/industrial look of the finish now.
