I thought I would give you guys a peek into our living room as it currently stands (very in-progress) as long as you promise to keep in mind that I just moved things into the room to prepare for our cocktail party, and haven’t “decorated” anything.
For starters, here are some iPhone shots of the living room when we bought the house:
And then it got way worse before it got better:
The living room stayed like this for several months, while I finished the ceilings in various other parts of the house. Finally, the weekend before our cocktail party, I rolled up my sleeves, gritted my teeth, and finished the ceiling.
And here is how it’s looking lately. Actually, not quite true as there have been several changes – the brass trunk sold and the front door may or may not have a new look… more on that to come!
Please remember that I did not choose the green wall color. I have been testing paint swatches this week and I think I’ve finally chosen the neutral that I’ll be using for most of the downstairs! As you can see, I have some very colorful and patterned furnishings, so I’m going to let the walls stay light and bright 🙂
I think Eamesy may be moving upstairs to the office to join E.T. as I have other plans for this corner. I am brainstorming what exactly I want to use as tv console. We were using the brass trunk in the meantime, but since it just sold, the tv is now sitting on the burl coffee table.
I have an exciting DIY lighting plan for this room. It lacks overhead lighting except for the little stained glass light by the door. Stay tuned!
You can read all about my vintage leather chesterfield sofa here.
I picked up that adorable little typewriter table at Goodwill for $10, but I doubt it will stay in here for long.
And here is another update that arrived after I took the pictures above:
My adorable zebra pillow cover that I won in a giveaway from the lovely Julia of Cuckoo4Design! You’re going to need to go ahead and visit her fabulous blog now 🙂 Her house tour was just featured on Young House Love!
So. Here’s what’s already happened in this room:
- Scraped popcorn ceilings, spackled, sanded, primed and painted
- Removed vertical blinds
And here’s what’s going to happen next/is currently in the works:
- Front door makeover
- Paint walls
- Make and hang malachite curtains
- Find sideboard/dresser/credenza to use as a tv console
- [Maybe] Find console table for the “entry way” for keys, papers, pretty things
- Lighting
- Accessorize!!! The most fun part, of course! Pillows, art, possibly a new rug… (Who am I kidding. I am way too cheap to buy a new rug, although Bryan hates leopard print with a fiery passion. We’ll see which he hates more: leopard print or rug prices.)

Thanks for the shout out! Yay the Zebra has a new home, love it.
Sigh out loud to the sale of the brass trunk 🙁
The zebra and the leather sofa are definitely the best of friends now!
Love the typewriter table! *sigh* And the Zebra pillow adds a very nice touch. 🙂
Thanks Gillian 🙂
Can Eamesy come stay at my house please? Hehehehehe, I covet it something chronic!
Maybe for a visit 😉
I love that Chesterfield and the story of how you got it. Brilliant.
Thank you 🙂 It's definitely my very favorite possession!
That couch bold patterned couch is so very lovely!! It's so unique (or at least I haven't seen anything like it). Can't wait to see what you decide on a council.
My beloved dragon couch! So old, so faded, but so very comfy!
