Really?! There’s so much info out there saying that post-80’s texture *should* be safe. That’s really good to know, Lucas – thank you for sharing. And I’ve already vowed to NEVER remove another popcorn ceiling myself 😀

I know it’s about 3 years late, but the date of construction does not apply to asbestos. It is still found in many products on sale at hardware stores and especially in popcorn ceiling texture, no matter what age.

Yay! When we were looking for our new home, I had all my fingers and toes crossed that it wouldn’t have popcorn ceilings – I feel like I’ve paid my dues! 🙂 But it’s definitely DIY-able!

(Obligatory safety warning: just be sure to take proper safety precautions and check for asbestos in older homes.)

I won’t lie – it’s definitely a bit of a hassle sparkling any dings/dents/lumps and then sanding it smooth prior to painting. But the sanding step will really help achieve a smooth surface! And flat paint helps hide any minor imperfections.

Hi Sarah! Our house was built in the late 80's, so I felt comfortable skipping the asbestos test. But I would be super paranoid about it if the house was any older!

Mine came in a big tub, premixed. The one I have is: "Lafarge Rapid Coat Low Dust All Purpose Joint Compound". Hope this helps!
