Jill, those are all such good tips! I haven't written any posts about selling on Craigslist yet, but I'll be sure to include a follow-up to this post from a seller's perspective! We have only dealt with the nicest people while selling out of our home, but I agree - it is SO IMPORTANT to be safe and aware. I've had several people ask to use our bathroom before, and because they were moms with small children (the children needed to use the bathroom) I didn't have a problem with it, but yes, it always feels awkward and I love your solution of suggesting a public bathroom just up the road :)

Gosh...maybe this is just 'cuz I live in a City. But I've also had buyers ask if they can use my bathroom. I always refer them to the McDonald's three blocks up. You have to get over the pressure to be "nice". You never know if they're going to rifle your medicine cabinet for drugs or take a side trip through your home to scope out what you might have to steal later.

These are great tips. Sometimes I sell things that aren't easy to just take to a public location so my extra tip would be to refer to yourself as "we" even if you live alone. I also keep it vague, as in, "at least one of us will be home at 1:00 on Saturday for the exchange" so they dont' know if it'll be me or my husband or both of us.

Also, when you must have people come to your home:

* Keep the item outside or on your porch if at all possible.
* If you must have it inside, such as in your garage, throw sheets or tarp over your other belongings so they can't see what other goodies you've got.
* Keep your kids inside and step outside to deal with the buyer. Lock your kids inside and take your keys with you - this allows you to keep your eyes on the buyer at all times instead of being distracted by your little ones. If you have a dog, bring the dog with you on it's leash.
* And gosh darnit! I'm not afraid to admit that I carry a pair of scissors in my pocket when I step out with a buyer. There's too many horror stories and even the most friendly transactions can take a deadly turn. I want a weapon.

That sounds SUPER suspect! Stay far away! Thanks for sharing that tactic - I haven't personally come across that scenario, but it definitely raises red flags!
